With the Home Secretary announcing that community sponsorship will become the primary route for refugee resettlement, this event offered parliamentarians an opportunity to hear directly from sponsored refugees and the host families who welcomed them – bringing to life how sponsorship works in practice and the positive impact it can have on host communities and the wider narrative of refugee resettlement.
Alongside these lived-experience voices, policy experts and organisations delivering sponsorship programmes also shared insights into how to build a successful scheme and explored the opportunities and challenges of the new announcement by the Government to enable ‘named sponsorship’ where sponsor groups can identify the refugees to be resettled.
The event featured speakers from Citizens UK, Community Sponsorship Alliance, Westbury Welcome, Colne Valley Welcomes Refugees, and the University of Birmingham.
