Joint Briefing and Discussion on Roma EU Citizens in the UK with the APPG for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma

Today the APPG on Migration and the APPG for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma co-hosted a panel discussion on the ongoing challenges with the European Union Settlement Scheme for Roma communities in the UK. The event was chaired by Olivia Blake MP and was also in partnership with the Roma Support Group and University of Sheffield.

Mihai Bica Calin from the Roma Support Group and Dr.Owen Parker from the University of Sheffield shared their recent research and report: ‘Roma EU citizens in the UK: ongoing struggles with the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)’.Their report highlights that many Roma communities in the UK continue to face challenges in securing or upgrading their status under the EUSS, with many struggling to evidence continuous residence or apply for their children.  They identified key issues relating to how the EUSS was implemented and access issues for those who are digitally excluded or have limited literacy.

They also highlighted the barriers many Roma face in using their digital status when accessing benefits, and renewing passports or ID documents. In addition, misinformation within the community about EUSS and the reduction in government funding for support services has further exacerbated these issues, leaving many without the necessary legal and administrative assistance.

Monique Hawkins from the 3 Million discussed campaigning around issues related to digital status from the early stages and highlighted multiple layers of bureaucratic processes

Denisa Gannon, a Solicitor from the Central England Law Centre, mentioned the challenges of switching from Pre-Settled to Settled Status and the risks of exploitation associated with it for Roma EU Citizens.

Olga Fuseini from the University of Sheffield emphasised the need for further support and highlighted the vital role played by local community support services.
